One of the many questions that couples ask during fertility treatments is whether sexual intercourse can be engaged in IVF treatment. Sexual intercourse is linked to increased uterine infection in late pregnancy, and lower clinical infection of the upper reproductive system is associated with poor IVF embryo transfer result. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a common fertility treatment that can help couples successfully conceive and have a full-term pregnancy. One of the many questions couples ask during fertility treatments is whether sexual intercourse is recommended during treatment.

During the IVF cycle, the uterine cavity is particularly vulnerable to growth-related infection, as the cervical mucosal barrier to increased infection is disrupted by embryo transfer catheter passage. Also, uterine myometrial activity increases during sexual intercourse, especially in the case of female orgasm. These contractions can interfere with the implantation of the early embryo because high spontaneous uterine activity is associated with poor IVF embryo transfer result. On the positive side, sexual intercourse can act to help with implantation. Your doctor will tell you when and how to avoid sex during IVF treatment.

During ovarian stimulation:

In treatment as part of the IVF procedure, women are given injectable fertility medications to produce egg follicles by stimulating their ovaries. Sexual intercourse does not discourage it, but a woman may experience discomfort due to the many egg follicles it produces in her ovaries. Having unprotected sex during ovarian stimulation can increase the chances of multiple pregnancies, which are risky for mother and baby. If you are having sex during the egg stimulation phase of IVF treatment, it is important to use a condom.

Before giving sperm:

Men should have a 3-day sexual abstinence before giving a sperm sample, should not ejaculate during the abstinence period, and this abstinence should not exceed 7 days. This method helps to ensure the highest possible sperm count. One sperm sample is usually given on the day of ovulation.

After the egg collection stage:

Your doctor will likely advise you not to have sexual intercourse for a while after egg retrieval, preventing any medical complications from the surgical procedure.

After Embryo Transfer:

Similarly, your doctor may recommend that you have sexual intercourse for a certain period of time after the embryo transfer. This is usually not a problem as most couples are not in the mood to have sexual intercourse after the egg retrieval procedure and embryo transfer.

In the event that the doctor does not prohibit it: there is no reason to refrain from sexual intercourse. There is no evidence that orgasm prevents implantation or causes miscarriage.
