Gebeliğin oluşabilmesi için öncelikle kadının yumurtasının yumurtalıklardan dışarı atılması, yumurtlaması gerekmektedir. Normal şartlarda kadın, ayda bir kez yumurtlamaktadır.
Sperm sayısının düşük, hareketlerinin zayıf ve spermde şekil bozukluğu olması doğal yolla gebelik elde edilmesini zorlaştırır. Hatta bazen imkansız hale getirebilir.
Yumurtalık rezervi kandan bakılan birtakım hormonlar veya ultrason ile ortaya konulabiliyor. Ancak günümüzde en değerli testler, adet döneminde her 2 yumurtalıktaki folliküllerin sayılması ve Anti Mullerian Hormon (AMH) adı verilen testler.
